Inner Beauty is... with Emma Balfour

As one of Australia’s most-recognised faces, model Emma Balfour has enjoyed an awe-inspiring career, gracing the catwalks for the likes of Chanel and appearing on countless magazine covers.

But, as this homegrown natural beauty reveals, she is also incredibly passionate about the environment and sustainability and works as a dedicated ambassador for MS

How do you think you have changed since your 20s?

  • I think my sense of self, for one, has solidified. I completely know who I am. I don’t second guess everything I do anymore. I’m more confident – and less concerned with what other people think.

That is the biggest thing, I think. You’re doing your thing and if your life’s going well, and you’re doing what you want to be doing, then why should you give a shit what anyone else thinks? Because it’s not about them, it’s about you and it’s about the people around you and what you’re putting in.

I You live in an urban environment so how do you incorporate your principles regarding sustainability in an environment where you don’t have the land?

  • Easily. I mean, we don’t live on a grand plot of land but we’ve got water tanks, compost bins, and chickens. We’re installing solar too – which is something I’ve been working towards for a long time. And just thinking a little bit more occasionally about bringing less crap in and putting less crap out. It’s just that mentality shift, isn’t it? I mean, you go to the supermarket and you watch everyone putting their stuff into plastic bags – which is just crazy that this is still happening!

A lot of people wouldn’t know that you’re a poet. How did you get into that?

  • When I quit modelling the first time, in 1998, I had been writing quite a lot of poetry. When I was travelling, I started writing quite a bit and as I was always moving around and busy, something was always distracting. I thought, instead of trying to write a novel, I’ll start with something short. I was also obsessed with song rhythms.

So, initially I used that as a bit of a format. Then, when I was pregnant with my first child – and when you’re pregnant you go a bit mad – I decided to get it printed and put it together. My collection of poems came out just after he was born and now, I’m working on volume two.

What does inner beauty mean to you?

  • Having a good and honest spirit.

Can you give us an example of a time you’ve listened to your gut instinct?

  • Most of my decisions have been made without a whole lot of brain input! I’m not good at being sensible in the traditional sense… my gut has helped me move countries, avoid trouble, stay grounded, raise children and be myself.

What do you do to get your daily GLOW on?

  • Besides my Glow? Family, fresh air, a balanced life – it’s important to be balanced.

I have to keep reminding myself that… I’m very fortunate.

When I’m on a plane I always… sleep.

I’d rather be… riding horses than doing pretty much anything else.
