I hope you are enjoying the cooler months – the chance to wind down and get into a different rhythm of brisk walks in cosy knits during the day and toasty nights at home, snuggled under blankets. I have been hibernating for a different, but very exciting reason; tucked away at home, busily cooking and writing my first inner beauty cookbook! Inspired to write this by you, my lovely customers who often ask me how I like to eat for vibrant health and radiant skin. This book will give you lots of delicious skin and health giving recipes you can both enjoy and share with your family and friends. Stay tuned, coming soon…. While I am loving winter, there is no doubt it can be hard on the skin, as the change of seasons often leads to dryness and rough patches, exacerbated by hot showers, excessive heating and a change in diet. While summer is all about protecting the skin from the sun, in winter it’s all about making sure our skin gets a different kind of attention, namely more moisturisation and protection from both the inside and the outside: getting lots of good fats into the diet (especially your omega 3’s) is important as well as applying lipid rich formulas on the skin to nourish and protect the skin’s layers; I really appreciate our Beauty Fix Balm and Dream Repair Serum especially in these cooler months, rich in omega’s 3, 6, 7 and 9 alongside butters and waxes and are so effective in keeping me feeling comfortable in my own skin! Keeping your immune system strong during cold and flu season is also paramount and while UVB rays may be damaging in summer, their absence in winter means we are not synthesising vitamin D, a nutrient which is very important for immune health, not to mention bone health and mood; so I’ve included a few tips in this newsletter on how to increase levels in the cooler months. We’ve also got very exciting stockist news, plus a delicious smoothie recipe that will give you a warm ginger kick on cold mornings, as well as a wonderful winter Beauty Chef offer that’s perfect for saving winter skin, boosting immunity and helping to bring the body back into balance. Enjoy!

Alex Knight is an international Aussie fitness model who is currently living in the Big Apple and travelling the globe. Having completed a degree in Biomedical Science, a certificate in Holistic Health Nutrition and becoming an accredited pilates instructor, Alex set about to create a coffee and avocado on toast revolution in the US with the chain, Bluestone Café. Alex is a natural beauty advocate and believes in beautiful skin from within.
You run your own extremely successful business, US based café chain Bluestone Lane with your husband Nick, as well as working as a fitness model and pilates instructor – you are one busy woman. How do you maintain balance and look after your health and wellness? I believe that balance is one of the foundations to health. Running a busy career, a personal life and remembering ‘you time’ is a juggling act. I have some critical routines in my day that help to promote balance. I always workout, whether it’s something really sweaty or calming, I find movement brings me grounding strength. Additionally my tomorrow starts with today, so I plan my day before I head to bed, with lists and appointment confirmations, so I simply wake and get into it. I like to tick boxes on daily accomplishments.
What’s the best piece of beauty advice you have been given? Stress is a full body expression and recently a makeup artist on set announced “being happy is the best beauty tool you have”. I love how simply she put it, she is right!
Bluestone Lane is known for bringing the Aussie breakfast culture to the US. What do you eat for breakfast? Being Australian, I love brekkie!!! During the week I love a smoothie breakfast. I start the morning with HYDRATION Inner Beauty Boost in some water, on an empty stomach. Followed by this morning smoothie which never disappoints – 1 whole grapefruit, 1 date, ½ cucumber, handful of spinach, cinnamon sprinkle, 1 teaspoon GLOW powder, 1 teaspoon of fibre powder, ½ cup of almond milk (or coconut milk), squeeze of lime, ¼-1/2 avocado. Blend thoroughly. Once blended add a handful of ice, blend again before serving.
What always puts a smile on your face? Relaxing in a bikini on a beach and hanging out with my Husband.
You love cooking and are a key player in bringing the quintessential Aussie breakfast to NYC (Avo on toast). What is your favourite meal to cook at home? Cooking an evening meal brings closure to my busy day – it is a mental note to myself to say ‘ok time to wind down’. I really love to cook tagines at the moment. I'm strongly plant based so this adds great flavour to hearty veggies. Another favourite is beetroot smash on homemade sprouted bread with a fennel & citrus rocket salad.
What is your beauty regime? How does your favourite Beauty Chef product fit into your routine? I love looking after my skin and take great pride in protecting and hydrating it. The Beauty Chef range has been incorporated into my daily routine from the moment I first tried it. I always travel with the CLEANSE Inner Beauty Powder, with a demanding flight itinerary this product ensures my digestion stays strong. I cleanse and lightly exfoliate with a 100% natural raw cotton cloth every morning, moisturise then finish the routine with a strong 50+ sunscreen on my face. I place a strong focus on inner health to radiate outer health and beauty, therefore my food and overall activities are always geared towards this. I like to use GLOW Inner Beauty Powder in my morning smoothie, after my morning HYDRATION Inner Beauty Boost. Additionally, post exercise or as a late afternoon snack, I go for the Chocolate BODY Inner Beauty Powder, as I often don’t have time to make something, when I’m in the full flight of the day.

INGREDIENT OF THE MONTH
In summer, getting a healthy dose of vitamin D is as simple as stepping into the sunshine. However, in winter, it is a little more difficult as UVB rays responsible for helping our skin to synthesis vitamin D is low or non-existent and no matter how much fruit and veg you eat, it’s hard for the body to get enough vitamin D from food alone. To compound the problem, the lack of sunlight in the winter months can actually deplete our reserves of vitamin D, which can lead to a weakened immune system (more coughs and colds); and studies have shown that severe vitamin D deficiencies are linked to various health problems from osteoporosis, diabetes and asthma to dementia and low mood. Vital for helping the body absorb calcium, vitamin D keeps bones strong, reduces inflammation in the body, can help alleviate acne and keep the skin soft, smooth and healthy. So what do you do when the skies are grey? It’s important to eat foods that are rich in vitamin D to boost your levels – think oily fish, cod liver oil, egg yolks, tofu, cheese, yoghurt, caviar, lean pork and mushrooms. If you are low in vitamin D (determined by a blood test), you also may need to supplement. Good news is that BODY Inner Beauty Powder contains 50% of your daily RDI of vitamin D, sourced from organic, bio-fermented mushrooms, and is a simple and tasty way to increase your intake during the cooler weather.
There are so many protein powders on the market – how do I know which is the best one to choose?
Protein powders, once reserved strictly for body builders, are now widely recognised as a great addition to any healthy diet, for their restorative, nutritional and hunger-busting benefits. But with so many different protein powders on the market, offering many different ingredients, types and concentrations of protein, how do you know if you’re choosing the right one? And are protein powders actually healthy?
Like anything, it’s important to read the ingredients list of your protein powder to work out if it’s good for you, or if you’re treating yourself to a glorified mix of synthetic ingredients and sugars.
Recognising my own need for a protein powder that was organic, natural, vegan, free from synthetic nasties and choc full of bio-available nutrients, I created BODY Inner Beauty Powder, which blends a mix of sprouted and fermented organic brown rice and pea proteins with a plethora of super-charged, organic ingredients.
Protein is an important nutrient and one that literally forms the building blocks of our body, but I wanted to create more than just another protein powder; BODY is a protein powder, superfoods powder, greens powder, pre and pro biotic and metabolic booster in one. Packed full of bio-available plant proteins, fermented fruits and vegetables, alkalising greens, spices, probiotics and green tea, this is a mega nutrient hit that will help to kick start your metabolism, curb sugar cravings and nourish your body so it can perform at its best.
If you’re thinking about adding a protein powder to your diet, here are a few of my top tips.
1. AVOID SYNTHETIC AMINO ACIDS There is some research to show that amino acids that are synthesised, or isolated may be problematic for your health. I prefer protein that comes from wholefoods like as opposed to synthetic sources.
2. AVOID DAIRY-BASED PROTEIN POWDER I find dairy-based protein powders can be hard on digestion. The right protein powder should give you energy and make you feel good, not lethargic and bloated. BODY is lactose free, hypo-allergenic and rich in four sources of easily digested vegan protein including fermented brown rice, organic peas, spirulina and organic chia seeds, to give you clean energy.
3. OPT FOR FERMENTED AND SPROUTED INGREDIENTS Our BODY Inner Beauty Powder uses a base of sprouted and fermented brown rice, peas, chia seeds and spirulina, which makes it much easier on the digestive system. When we eat protein we may only digest between 12-25 per cent of that protein, but when it’s bio-fermented and sprouted, it’s easier for the body to process, meaning you can digest more, up to around 85 per cent. This ensures it is properly digested and not just sitting in your gut causing problems. You’ll also be getting more nutrients from the wholefoods that will assist in digestion and will help you feel fuller for longer.
4. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY It’s about the quality of the protein and ingredients, rather than the quantity of protein. While a powder may have a high protein content, it may not be particularly digestible. You need to determine whether it contains a balanced essential amino acid profile and whether it provides you energy and actually makes you feel well, if not, listen to your gut and opt for something else.
It is important to eat good quality protein throughout the day as it is the best way to maintain metabolic efficiency, balance blood sugar levels, burn fat and support cellular health as well as help bring your body back into balance.
BODY is not only Certified Organic, but the protein content is naturally extracted, unlike other protein powders which may use chemicals or acid hydrolysis. BODY uses foods that are sprouted and fermented using the genius of nature so they nourish, not deplete, and help bring your body into balance.
