It's been a few months since our last newsletter (we hope you've enjoyed the recipes we've been sending in the meantime!) and we have so many plans, products and promotions to share with you. The most exciting news of all, however, is that we've been busy working on a brand new range of amazing, super-effective probiotic elixirs called HYDRATION, COLLAGEN and ANTIOXIDANT, which are available on the website now. These amazing bio-fermented concentrates are Inner Beauty Boosts because they're designed to give your skin an extra burst of hydration, collagen or antioxidants in the way that if you think of GLOW as your moisturiser, then these Boosts are the equivalent of a serum. Plus they're good for your gut and are delicious, too.
Also this month, The Beauty Chef is off to Bologna, Italy! We have been invited to exhibit in The Extraordinary Gallery at one of Europe's most prestigious international beauty trade shows and, as one of just 34 brands individually selected from across the globe to participate in this gallery, we're both honored and excited to be jetting off to spread the word about inner beauty, fermentation and our range of powders and drinks. And to top off the trip, we are jetting over to NYC afterwards for a fun meet-and-greet evening at CapBeauty (our US retail partner), where we'll get to chat with some of our US based customers about all things beauty. We're hoping to put together a similar evening in Australia soon, so look out for upcoming dates.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this month's antioxidant rich green mask recipe, learn a little more about probiotics and why they're so important to you and to us here at The Beauty Chef, and are inspired by the brilliant make-up artist Max May. Enjoy!

We all know probiotics are good for us, and in recent years there's been a lot of buzz about how to include them in your diet to promote good health. But do you know exactly what a probiotic is and why it's good for you? In short, probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that live in your gut and help to keep your digestive system healthy. Unlike antibiotics (which means 'against life' in Latin) that kill bacteria, probiotics (which means 'for life') help the good bacteria in your gut to flourish, which ultimately means good general health, good digestion and elimination, and radiant skin. Probiotics are naturally found in your gut flora, but antibiotics, stress, alcohol, the contraceptive pill and a poor diet can all decrease your levels of natural probiotics, which is why supplements can help restore gut balance. Here are three things you didn't know about probiotics - and why you need more probiotics in your life.
1. Probiotics protect your gut from harmful bacteria. Our gut is a very complex place and probiotic microorganisms help keep everything in balance. It's when your gut flora is out of whack after a course of antibiotics or medication or periods of overindulgence or high stress, that bad bacteria can take hold, which can result in skin conditions, yeast overgrowth, urinary-tract issues, gastro symptoms, IBS, infections, colds and more. Taking a daily dose of probiotics helps to keep the bad bacteria in check - and keep your body, health and skin in top condition. 2. Probiotics feed off prebiotics. Yep, you read that right, prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates and are basically lunch for probiotics. When probiotics and prebiotics are combined in fermented foods, they form a symbiotic, which means they contain both live bacteria and the fuel they need to thrive. All Beauty Chef products contain both pro- and prebiotics in our fermented formulas for maximum health benefits and good gut health. 3. Taking the right dosage is important. Probiotics are invisible to the naked eye, so it's no wonder that the dosage is measured in millions of CFUs (colony forming units). Look for a probiotic dosage that has a bare minimum of 10 million for best results (our new Inner Beauty Boost drinks, for example, contain a minimum of 6 billion CFUs per serve). Also, look at the probiotic strains included in your probiotic formula - all Beauty Chef products use a lactic-acid producing culture with 20 years of research behind it and contain many strands (including lactobacillus and bifidobacterium). We believe our bodies have a synergy with nature and can assimilate natural fermented foods more readily than synthetic, which is why we don't use synthetic cultures or strains in our formulas. Plus, our fermented ingredients are not pasteurized, which means they are alive and good for your skin and gut.
MAX MAY He's the Australian celebrity hair and make-up artist who has created looks for Rose Byrne, Abbie Cornish, Lara Bingle, Sarah Murdoch and more. His work has also been featured in Australian and international fashion magazines including Harper's Bazaar, ELLE, Oyster, Russh, Grazia and Ten. Plus, he also happens to be a fan of The Beauty Chef. Here, he walks us through a day in his life and reveals how he keeps his skin in shape. 1. What's the best piece of beauty advice you've ever received? That the art of make-up is to make it look like it has always been there. When I first started, I remember being briefed by a stylist who said: 'The make-up needs to fit the girl's face. It needs to look like it belongs there!' I can still remember the tone in his voice 12 years later and I have spent my career working to that philosophy. 2. You're one of the most in-demand make-up artists in Australia. What does a day in your life look like? Every day is completely different for me - some days I'm up at 3am and straight into hair and make-up for celebrity on a press junket. Other days I'm shooting an ad or editorial and I will start between 7am-8am and work through the day until I hit the gym around 6pm. If I'm working at home on my beauty blog, maxmade.com.au, I will get up early and run down to the beach and do my soft-sand laps and workout on the outdoor gym before I come back and get started. I love the mornings when I can exercise it gives me so much more energy and helps clear my mind so I can focus throughout the entire day. I also meditate before I go to sleep for about 15-25 minutes. It helps me slow my mind down so I can sleep. 3. In all the madness, how do you stay healthy and keep your skin looking good? Even if I work a 14-hour day, I still allocate time to work out, run or even skip. It not only enables me to work the long hours required in my job, but it gets the oxygen flowing, too. I eat super clean and very rarely drink, so my skin hardly ever breaks out or has to process any junk, although it does have its days, especially if I have had a couple of weeks of early starts. The Beauty Chef Water Purifier has encouraged me to up my water supply, though, and has stopped me from downing so much coffee, which has made such a difference to my skin. I also religiously use the GLOW & DETOX powders, which I've been mixing into a veggie juice instead of drinking coffee - I swear and live by those products! My skin, and the skin of my clients who now use them, are so much clearer and more stable as the seasons change or stress levels go up and down. They're unbelievable! My skin and particularly my eyes are so much brighter now. 4. We love the way you create fresh, dewy complexioned make-up for your clients. What are your tips for getting this look at home? Good skin care is imperative. If your skin is in shape, it only takes a couple of products to get that fresh dewiness that is such a huge phenomenon in the beauty world right now. You need to use a moisturiser that hydrates the skin, leaving it plump and fresh. From there, it's as simple as finding a foundation with a dewy finish (I use Ellis Faas Skin Veil) and mix it with a liquid luminizer to give skin that extra lift. I'm currently obsessed with Charlotte Tilbury's Wonder Glow - these two products will change your life! 5. Who or what inspires you? It changes every day. It can be as simple as a song I've heard or as complex as an exhibition or an artist I've found and been studying. I guess it's about having your eyes open to the world.
